Stata/MP lets you analyze data in one-half to two-thirds the time compared with Stata/SE on inexpensive dual-core laptops and in one-quarter to one-half the time on quad-core desktops and laptops. Stata/MP can run faster on multiprocessor computers. Stata/MP is capable of supporting up to 64 processors/cores.
The most important thing when working with computationally intensive estimation processes is speed. Some Stata’s estimation methods, including linear regression are almost perfect parallelized. That means that they run twice, four times, four times, eight times, on eight cores, or eight times faster than on two cores. Some estimation commands can be parallelized more than others. As a median, estimation commands run 1.8x faster on 2 cores. 2.9x faster on 4 cores. 4.1x faster if you have 8 cores.
Management of large databases can be complicated. Speed is important. Adding variables to the database is nearly 100 per cent parallelized. Sorting is 61% parallelized.
Some procedures are not parallelized. However, some are inherently sequenced. This means they run at the same speed using Stata/MP.
